Tips for Taking Stress Out of a Job-Related Move

By Lisa Walker | March 16, 2022

Moving to a new location for a job is often an exciting challenge, especially if you have children and pets. Taking the time to prepare for the move can help you to reduce the stress that comes along with this situation. There are many different things to think about when you’re preparing for this type of move.

Choose the Best Location Possible

Before you start looking for a new home in Walnut Creek, CA, you'll need to learn a bit about the area. You should research things like the crime rate and cost of living. If you have children of any age, you'll be happy to know that Walnut Creek has several great schools, such as Buena Vista Elementary and College Park High.

Plan Your New Home

Once you find your new home, you can start the planning phase of the process. Think about any special challenges you may have. For example, a person who works from home may need a home office space. This could mean setting up a bedroom as an office but may also mean carving out part of a different room if there isn’t a spare bedroom available.

Depending on how old your children are, you may also need to find a dedicated space for them to play or do schoolwork. Taking the time to make these plans now makes the moving-in process easier.

Start the Packing Process Early

As soon as you know you’re going to move, start packing up things you won’t need before then. This is a great chance to purge things and get rid of items you don’t really need. Moving is a lot easier when you aren’t taking a bunch of useless things with you.

Consider going to a minimalist lifestyle in the months before the move. You can pack a little at a time. By the week before the move, you should have everything packed except the clothing and personal care essentials you’ll need in that time.

Clearly label the boxes as you pack. Ideally, you’ll make a note about which room the box needs to go in at the new home and an overview of the contents. For example, you could write “Living Room: Movies” so you know exactly what’s in the box and where it should go. Some people use a color label system to denote the destination room for boxes.

Find Reputable Movers

One of the easiest ways to get your things from your current location to your new home is using movers. Make sure you choose a reputable company that offers insurance on the move. Check the reviews of the company and find out if they have a positive reputation.

Another thing to check is the pricing structure. Ideally, you’ll find a company with upfront pricing and no hidden fees. This helps you to budget better. If your new job is reimbursing you for this expense, you’ll know if you're within the allotted amount.
